What makes for a memorable fundraiser?

#TBT #ThrowbackThursday – What’s one of your all-time favorite fundraising events you attended, or organized, or both?

One favorite of mine was a May 2015 benefit for youth programs that took place at a scenic and historic Philadelphia locale. It came together through the incredible teamwork of my very capable event fundraising committee, well-connected board, supportive sponsors, partnering organizations, and most importantly, my hard-working professional colleagues I could easily tag 50+ people to recognize their contributions to the success of this event, which at the time was the most successful one-time fundraiser in the history of the organization.

What made this event, in particular, one of my all-time faves?

To be sure, the outdoor location was beautiful: although we did face the threat of rain interrupting our gathering, in the end we were thankfully spared.  The setting, the food, and the entertainment were all outstanding. Client testimonials moved the crowd. We were joined by numerous elected officials (and some who were seeking election).  There was, as I recall, some magic in the air, and a whole lot of fun.

Ultimately, I think the key to our success was how hard our team worked to ensure that the purpose for which we had gathered was front and center. Throughout the months of lead-up and at every opportunity during the event itself, our cause was consistently communicated.  It was reflected in all our print and digital materials, in the signage, through the entertainment, and in the words of our clients and the awards that were given out that night. To be among a large group of people celebrating and supporting our mission was certainly the best part of that night for me.
