Board recruitment advice

Board recruitment advice

Before recruiting another board member, ask yourself these three questions:

1. In relation to your organization's strategy, what roles are needed now?

2. What specific skills would strengthen the overall board of directors?

3. Whose voices are missing from your leadership?  Are your recruitment efforts truly inclusive and broad?

Think about what I call a three-legged stool approach: diversity of life experience, skillsets, and roles.

Then get to work. Before you conduct interviews to move folks forward, be sure you have a solid onboarding process – giving people the training and tools they need to be successful – to enhance the overall success of your board and your retention rate for new board members.
