James Forten, Sailmaker, Philadelphian Businessman + Philanthropist
James Forten, Sailmaker, Philadelphian Businessman + Philanthropist
Another example of a Black #philanthropist is James Forten, born into a free family in colonial #Philadelphia.
Once captured by the British as a teenager during the Revolutionary War, he rejected an offer to join the other side, insisting on his loyalty.
Forten apprenticed in the sail-making trade, became wealthy, a #manager of both Black and white employees, and a leader in the abolitionist #movements.
He funded multiple publications, raised money for the movement to end slavery, and assisted those who fled slavery in the South.
Meetings were held often in his home at 336-338 Lombard Street in Society Hill, Philadelphia, and his #legacy inspired many who joined him in the movements of which he was a part.
