What’s your favorite part of doing an environmental scan?
Yesterday, a colleague and I were updating a SWOT analysis around institutional funders for their organization. When we got to the “Opportunities” section, the part where we looked at their peer group's funders, I became especially interested and excited.
“Why is that?” I wondered. And then I realized, the opportunity exploration feels a bit like gold mining. To me, the gold represents the means through which an organization will ultimately be better enabled to fulfill its mission.
By analyzing the areas where a program or organization intersects with peers, and identifying who is funding those peer entities, we can discover new opportunities – and sometimes entirely new categories – of support that may not currently be in the pipeline.
